Passive RF Sensing for Counter-UAS Architectures
Optii’s passive photonic RF sensing is being explored as a sensing capability within larger Counter-UAS architectures. A fibre-connected sensing point separates RF interaction from powered signal interpretation, supporting discussions about distributed RF awareness.
The Counter-UAS sensing challenge
Counter-UAS teams combine sensing inputs to assess potential threats. RF detection can contribute information about emitting systems, but RF sensing alone does not establish that every signal comes from a drone. Non-emitting aircraft require other sensing approaches.
Passive RF detection
Optii’s sensing point is passive and fibre-enabled. This architecture is relevant to evaluating drone RF detection concepts where teams want to separate an exposed sensing point from powered electronics. Detection, identification and tracking performance must be established through application-specific testing.
Why photonic sensing is relevant
Moving signal interpretation away from the forward sensing point offers an architectural option for exposed or distributed installations. Fibre routing, the operating environment and the intended RF signals remain central to any feasibility assessment.
Integration into layered sensing architectures
RF sensing for drones can be evaluated alongside radar, electro-optical and other sensing inputs. Optii is a potential sensing contributor; this page does not describe a complete Counter-UAS detection, classification or defeat system.
Relevant Optii differentiators
Optii’s public architecture centres on a passive forward sensing point, fibre connectivity and remote interpretation. These features guide integration discussions rather than constituting a guarantee of detection or immunity to interference.
Platform integration and evaluation
C-UAS sensor integration starts with the platform, sensing geometry, fibre access and data interfaces. A technical meeting can establish a test plan and clarify the evidence needed for the intended use case.
